A few folks I know on-line or whose blogs I read etc are doing something called Project Life. It's a quick and simple approach to scrapbooking. I love scrapbooking, but it does take quiet some time to do pages for albums so they tend toward recording the special moments and events. I'm also getting well behind already. Then there is the old fashioned diary where we write in what we did each day and what we thought about things or felt etc. Project Life seems to be a good way of merging the two.
Project Life is Becky Higgin's idea and I checked out some of her videos, products and ideas etc on her website (here). Her stuff looks cool and so simple to use. It made me think about the kids and helping them to document life. TJ digi-scraps but only occasionally as she wants to do other things and digi scrapping takes her 2-3 times longer then it does for me. Tisha wants to learn but is still in the early stages of writing and mouse control. Roo struggles to communicate due to the Aspergers but wants to be creative and create books. Would this be good for them?
Getting the supplies to do this physically can't be done locally. I've looked around and the craft stores don't stock Becky's lines or anything similar. So we'd be looking at internet orders if I can find UK based one. However, I could set-up templates to to this digitally, after all the photos are all digital. I guess this is going to need some more thought and research before I choose a set direction for this. Mine will probably stay digital, I use this laptop daily anyway and have all the supplies I could ever need either in my digital stash or instantly available from a store (no shipping time involved).
Time to go collect the kids from school now. I'll show them some of the videos later in the week and talk with them about it.

I don't think you need to have the official supplies to do PL - I've seen lots of (free) printables you can use, lines like Photo Freedom which can be adapted for use and plenty of people cut up cardstock into 6x4 squares to embellish themselves. All you really "need" are divided page protectors! Still much to much of a commitment for me though!
I'm doing Project Life, but I am doing it my way. The materials would cost me $150AU and that is way out of my budget. What i am doing is a double page spread with the photos for the week, filling the empty spaces between the photos with patterned paper, and then writing the journalling on the patterned paper. I also put a little tag on the photo to show when it was taken.
What a great idea to have your kiddos do PL! I agree with the other posters. You don't have to have the PL brand pages to make a PL-style album. Hope you'll share what you decide and how it works out for you!
